Layers can be confusing, especially around top-level, mask and clipping positions. Here’s a walk around some of the things that go on here.
Beware! This can be confusing if you’re not very comfortable with layers. Hang in there, though, because, as this shows, it’s how it is.
Bottom line: Choose a method for using layer (top level/groups, masking level, clipping level) and stick to it. Know the other methods so you can know what’s going on. Watch where new layers go and move them to where you want them.
